Don’t Forget: Your Hair and Lips Need Sunscreen Too!!!

We are painfully aware of the damages the sun can do to our bodies. Using SPF lotions, moisturizers and oils has become our daily routines. But are you protecting your hair and lips?

Until I started searching, I was not one hundred percent sure what the long term damages of the sun can do to my hair and lips. So the research began on finding the right protection and why I needed it.

Lip protection is more important than one would think. With skin cancer being the most common type of cancer in the U.S., the lips are often overlooked. Protecting the lips can not only be a preventative measure to avoid cancer, but it also prevents aging, sunburns and dryness. One would think lip gloss or lipstick would shield us from the sun, but it actually does the opposite. The shiny gloss attracts the sunlight and UV radiation, creating a deeper penetration into the skin. Have no fear! I have found some amazing SPF for your lips.

Alba Botanica Lip Care: SPF 25, hypoallergenic, made with 100% vegetarian ingredients, no animal testing.
Yes to Pomegranate Lip Balm: SPF 15, broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection, 99% natural, no parabens or petroleum, and cruelty free.
Badger Lip Balm: SPF 15, broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection, 95% natural, certified organic, no chemical active sunscreen agents.
Fresh-Sugar Lip Treatment: SPF 15, tinted color, no petroleum or mineral oils, vitamins A, C and E protect from wrinkle causing free radicals.

Never thought about protecting your hair, huh? Me neither. The reasons for why you should will amaze you. The lack of moisture can cause oxidation and distress which means color treated hair fades faster, dehydration of hair strands and the look/ feel will become dull. As we age, our hair normally thins out a bit but unprotected hair causes premature hair aging which means the volume depreciates and the hair thins out at a faster rate. SPF can filter a shield over the head stopping UVA (the long waves) and UVB (the short waves) from penetrating the scalp. If you are a swimmer the chlorine and salt water have free radicals that attach to the hair fibers, so an SPF will keep in the moisture. Try these SPF options for hair before you hit the sun!

Leonor Greyl: oil, free of SLS, silicone and parabens, increases moisture, natural UVA/UVB protection.
Aveda Hair Veil: protect hair for 16 hours, UVA/UVB filters, antioxidant blend protects hair from free radicals.
Sachajuan Hair In The Sun: full coverage UVQ protection, water resistant, removal with shampoo. After care product of Hair After The Sun for repairing the hair.
Clarins Sunscreen Care Oil: SPF 30, water resistant, nourishes hair with organic Indonesian Nyamplung Oil.
